What are the basic principles of cylindrical grinding?


Mechanics is a complex science that combines both ingenuity and precision. However, it sometimes needs to be taken to the extreme to ensure the proper functioning of a system. This level of accuracy can be achieved by using a machining technique called grinding. As its name suggests, this consists of reshaping a previously manufactured part in order to perfectly adapt it to the role it will have to play. In most cases, grinding is done by removing small chips of material with a wheel or millstone. It can be flat or cylindrical.

What is the purpose of cylindrical grinding?

Cylindrical grinding has many applications. It is particularly useful for manufacturing parts that require extreme design accuracy for use. After all, a mechanical system in which each part has the right dimensions works optimally. The risk of breakage and deformation of parts is also reduced.

Shafts, those more or less thick rod-shaped parts designed to produce a force in a circular motion, therefore often need to undergo grinding. Grinding this part reduces the intensity of the friction it will be subjected to. The shaft therefore becomes more durable and reliable.

Cylindrical grinding is also used in areas with particularly high technical requirements. Many industrial machines have ground parts, as do the vast majority of engines.

Cylindrical grinding: how does it work?

To grind a cylindrical part, the hydrostatic slide machine is the most suitable piece of equipment. It can work with a variety of materials and modify delicate parts while preventing them from vibrating and breaking. The part to be ground is placed between two points that will make it rotate on itself. The wheel or millstone, an abrasive disc adapted to the material to be treated, also rotates at very high speed. The part will then move back and forth on the machine, eliminating imperfections with the help of the grinding wheel.

The shape of a part can also be modified according to the function assigned to it. This is done by removing pieces of material while tilting the wheel to the desired shape. The result is a part with a measurement accuracy of a few microns (a few tenths of a thousandth of an inch).
